Managers Denny and Mary Caldwell have created a garden paradise at Klipsan Beach Cottages. Each ocean-view cottage has a mini garden and a window box, and a walk through the grounds reveals woodlands, beach pines, a fenced rose garden, and a fountain with waterfall. A few years ago, we at Tangly Cottage joined them in maintaining and enhancing the gardens, and it is sheer pleasure to work there.
A couple of years ago, the deer who live on the grounds of KBC inspired a garden transformation: The rascally deer kept eating Mary's Red Rascal miniature roses. So Denny and Robert built a fence, and Skyler and Mary picked out even more roses...New Dawn, Climbing Cecile Brunner, Eden, Polka, Jude the Obscure, and more. We redesigned the inside of the garden, changing it from square beds edged with railroad ties to a circular center and curved beds.
Now the deer come to the outside of the fence and nibble, but other than a stray branch, the roses are safe...and laden with bloom.
